Aspartame Awareness Comes to France

Health activist and author, Corinne Gouget, teaches people how to read food labels in France.
The picture at right was taken on April 2, 2006 at a fair in Béziers which Corinne attended. She had a booth there (which she does frequently in France). Her book is entitled: "DANGER - additifs alimentaires: Le guide indispensible pour ne plus vous empoisonner" and sells for 6 Eur.

You might recognize this technique as it compares to the diketopiperazine (DKP, a tumor agent) tests performed by Searle and presented to the FDA for the passage of aspartame. DKP is one of the break-down products of aspartame. Searle-funded researchers would let the DKP permeate the rat food in both the control group and the experimental group, then report that there's no correlation of cancer between each group. FDA scientists noticed an unusually high rate of cancer in both groups and prevented passage of aspartame because of these and other carcinogenic properties.
The NCI performs a similar card trick by ignoring the fact that aspartame is present throughout 6000 different products in the U.S. food supply. Although there are a couple questions to identify users of aspartame with coffee and drinkers of diet soda, the actual diet questionnaire does nothing to separate aspartame users from non aspartame users.
The NCI had to know that their public assessment of this survey would be quickly dismissed, so why did they elect to occupy such a short-lived position? Could they have reached a point were credibility is no longer an important goal, or do they assume that various nonprofit front-groups would invest in enough advertising money to distract the public from what appears to be a fraud.
Europe's largest aspartame distributor has announced its withdrawal only a few days before the NCI anouncement.
This move by the NCI could mark one of a few remaining desperate power plays for an industry in its last throws.
Quick! Do a Study!: In the face of the damning in-lab Italian study of 1800 rats last year demonstrating once again the carcinogenic properties of aspartame, the Feds (National Cancer Institute) were compelled to do a survey of 340,045 men and 226,945 women, ages 50 to 69. Although in over 6,000 products, they somehow catagorized users by level of recalled consumption of most obvious aspartame laced products (ie. Diet Sodas and Equal). Assuming clear recollection and an untainted nongum-chewing control group, NCI Researcher Unhee Lim, PHD, states there was no link found to aspartame consumption for the types of cancers found in the Italian study. Despite the fanfair from the industry-funded nonprofits, Unhee Lim states later that she is not ready to make any public health recommendations about aspartame consumption at this time. Smart woman. Paul Joseph Watson of Prison Planet immediately takes issue with the way the study was reported and relinquishes us from the task of referring to what is omitted from the AP article. That is the 70 independently funded studies that find something wrong with aspartame.
"It goes a fair way toward allaying concerns about aspartame," said Michael Jacobson, head of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Was the protocal of this study designed to reassure the public?
Ultimately, Melanie Warner and the New York Times should be thanked for the most balanced mainstream coverage to date. It's important to note at this stage that the FDA and the European Commission are still reassuring people that there is no need to avoid aspartame. Flashback: "There's no SV40 contamination in those polio vaccines..."

Namaste Magazine, one of our first distributors of "Sweet Misery", featured material to help promote this film and its follow-up, "Sweet Remedy". This article presented an opportunity to expand upon the role and mechanisms of propaganda through the use of controlled media and psychotropic drugs/food additives. With articles like "Dear America, I Need You to Wake Up" by Vagina Monolog Author Eve Ensler and a daughter of Iraq's "Letter to the British People", a bewildered population is showing signs of serious attention to recent state acts of murder, treason and fraud. Can the opportunity for such an ambitious, executive power grab come from a carefully managed sense of reality? THROUGH THE SHADOWS NOW AVAILABLE (9/15/05)
What prompted Cori Brackett to make "Sweet Misery"? Readers of this new book get a more detailed insight into how Cori Brackett connected aspartame to her illness and how it affected her.
An award-winning, published poet with an MFA in Creative Writing, Cori tells this story in "Through the Shadows", an illustrated booklet accompanied by a spoken-word audio CD recording.
To experience "Through the Shadows", readers are asked to become simultaneous listeners to find the place from which the sound of words and their overall imagery become integrated .
Cori explains her choice: "Memoirs and poetry offer a departure from the often dry, journalistic approach to very difficult subjects. Sometimes, subjects lose their humanity without the use of a different format. This activity helps draw out and enable our identification of organizations willing to sacrifice public health for a buck. In this case Smith's Foods spokesman states this proposal is being closely watched. Spokesman Marsha Gilford is quoted: "It would be a significant reduction of products in our stores". Smith's time could be better spent demanding to have safer products in their stores.
(8/26/05): Dismissing Brain Tumors: The "rumors" of aspartame causing brain tumors were initially based on the idea that during the tests required for FDA approval in the 70's, tumors were literally being cut out of the rats being studied. This was confirmed in the Bressler Report and by later testimony of senior FDA toxicologist Dr. Adrian Gross. WebMD, showing some contrition for its previous article, "Are Artificial Sweeteners Safe?", ate a morsel of crow July 28th of this year in its own report of the Italian study linking lymphoma and leukemia to aspartame consumption in rats (see below) . Assuming an interest in fairness, Web MD pits the study against a statement by the infamous Calorie Control Council, which states the Soffritti study findings "are not consistent with the extensive scientific research and regulatory reviews done on aspartame." Again, the CCC ignores the independent reviews and studies finding problems with aspartame. Here's where things get really weird:
Web MD enlists blood-cancer specialist Martin R. Weihrauch to deny in the article any link between aspartame and brain cancer. In it he states "It's true that reports linking brain and breast cancer to aspartame had little merit." Then, Web MD finishes with a list of additional findings in the study and gives us this final sentence to their article:
"A few brain tumors were seen in rats fed aspartame, while those who did not get the sweetener did not get brain tumors. But this finding, too, could have been due to chance."
